Microsoft and Sonu are purportedly planning to postpone the next release dates of Xbox and PS6.
According to a new report, RAM is likely to be a problem with the introduction of next-gen consoles, such as PlayStation 6. In case, the PS6 launch dates might end up being postponed with rising prices of the hardware. This may not, however, be an issue, as a majority of players may have thought. Similar to PC gamers, the console manufacturers are grappling with high memory prices. They are in a dilemma of either increasing the costs of the future hardware or taking a chance of increased DRAM production.
Gamers have speculated on the effect on the next generation consoles with the record-high memory prices. Sony has the potential to release the PS6 as early as 2027, whereas Microsoft and AMD are working on a new Xbox.
Regrettably, Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming is confirming that the discussions regarding the possible delays have started. On a recent podcast, the first speculation about a possible change of plans by the manufacturers was made by Insider Gaming.
Henderson states that the state of affairs has forced the console manufacturers to discuss whether or not the next generation of consoles should be released in the planned 2027-2028 timeframe.
The alternative approach that Sony and Microsoft can adopt is to increase the MSRPs of the imminent systems. The insider, however, explains that there is hope that prices of memory will level off sooner than expected.
Other key suppliers of memory, such as Samsung and SK Hynix, can also increase the manufacture of DRAM to reduce the shortage. Until then, however, they appear to be satisfied with the task of serving as more slaves to the growing AI data centres.
The new Xbox console, as well as the PS6, will use GDDR7 memory. Both the VRAM of GPUs and the large DDR5 of desktops and laptops are prone to the diminishing DRAM supply. The system used by Microsoft can be similar to a Windows gaming PC, which is becoming very costly to assemble.
Another aspect addressed in the podcast was the way the manufacturers should look at the coming few years. November already provided gamers with a shocking decline in the sales of U.S. consoles. Such an increase in the next-gen Xbox or PS6 price will only reduce income even more.
The panel proposed to reduce the prices of PS5 and Xbox Series X, instead of promoting new hardware. Despite that, that might be improbable with older devices also facing a similar problem of increased component prices.
The astronomical pricing of RAM in the DDR5 comes in with the Steam Machine by Valve as well. It has been rumoured that Valve might not release the compact Linux PC within the expected 1 quarter of 2026.
