5 signs you should consider replacing the smartphone you use for work
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

To many of us, it might seem obvious when we should buy a new smartphone for personal use: when a company like Apple or Samsung unveils a new model that has us particularly salivating. However, it’s not always so clear when we ought to start reconsidering our choice of work handset.

Headline features like new colors and better cameras can be a tougher sell in corporate phones, which don’t always urgently need such additions. So, when should you upgrade your work device?

You can’t update your mobile to the latest operating system

If your business phone has stopped periodically prompting you to update its software, one possibility is that the manufacturer’s support lifecycle for this phone has lapsed.

You can check for definite for looking in the app through which you would usually download updates to your phone’s OS. If your phone can no longer get these updates, you could end up leaving security holes unpatched and, consequently, ready for unscrupulous hackers to exploit.

Your battery routinely fails to last through the workday

Assuming your phone is not defective, its battery should be able to fuel you right through a standard workday, says Insider. However, if the battery keeps running out before that, and especially if it feels like it repeatedly conks out sooner and sooner with time, you should be on red alert.

As smartphone batteries lose capacity every time they are charged from empty to full, you should replace the phone if, as Reader’s Digest acknowledges, you can’t just replace the battery instead.

You are always short of storage space

There are likely an awful lot of demands on your smartphone’s storage space – especially if your work phone does double duty as a personal phone as well, which could easily be the case if your workplace runs a BYOD (bring your own device) policy.

It doesn’t help that standards of what exactly is “enough” with a phone’s storage space can shift over time – which is why older phones can have only about 4GB of onboard memory, a paltry amount by today’s reckoning.

You struggle to get things done because your phone is laggy

As apps become more sophisticated, your phone could start slowing down. That could be due to your existing phone’s ageing processor struggling to keep pace with demands of modern apps. These apps can also drag down your device’s speed by contributing to a lack of storage space.

Replacing your handset with a beefier model can enable you to make optimum use of telecoms software, such as unified communications (UC) software, fantastic for enhancing your communications both in the office and while on business trips.

Your phone display’s glass is so cracked it is hazardous

You might be convinced that it wouldn’t be much trouble for you to continue using a work phone with cracked display glass. You could soon think very differently, though, if you cut your finger on shards of that glass, as can too easily happen when you are busy – and, in the business world, aren’t we all?
